His parents joined the Foreign Services and Martel grew up in many places, such as Costa Rica, France, Spain, Alaska, Mexico, and Canada (BC, ON), graduating from Trinity College School in Port Hope Ontario in 1981. He attended Trent University and graduated with a degree in philosophy, turning to full-time writing at the age of 27. He traveled widely as an adult, has traveled and spent time in Iran, Turkey, and India, but now is based mainly in Montreal.
