Game series where you, as the commander, defend earth against aliens. Xcom is know for strategy and tactics with a heavy emphasis on RNG (random number generator).

STEVE : I was playing xcom last night and ended up getting my whole squad killed after missing a 98% shot.

XCOM syndrome 

A condition in which, after logging many consecutive game hours of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the user begins to hallucinate seeing semi-transparent blue shields and half-shields in real-life cover items such as walls, counters, and cars.

Dmitri rubbed his eyes and shook his head as blue shields tinged his view. After last night's gaming binge, the XCOM syndrome was starting to get to him.

X-Com 

Game series, based off of UFO lore as well as own made up stuff. Original came out in 1994, with Terror from the Deep coming out in 1995, and Apoclypse in 1997 as direct descendents. There are other games based in the same universe, as well as two planned but cancelled games named Genesis and Alliance.
PC Gamer has the original free in its 2000 september disc.

As a word it can be used to describe any type of alien defense force, as X-Com comes from a 3 word phrase of close meaning.
