A remark that informs an individual they have missed out on background information critical to a joke (or storey).
Joe: Hey Ben, remeber that book?
Ben: HAHA, yes, i'm sure the mice would be pleased with 42.
Joe: HAHAHA
Daniel: What the? Mice?
Ben: (to Daniel) Backgrounding Daniel!
Daniel: Oh. Damn.

Share definition
The act of, or process in partaking in the complete and utter public destruction of the character/reputation of a person of interest via close analysis of their personal life and or past history, in order to exact a detrimental outcome for the person of interest. Usually malicious, or done in revenge.
Stacy didn't like Bryan so she did some backgrounding and got him expelled from college.
