On the edge of your ability or capacity. Literal definition comes from being right up against a wood railing or wall with no where to go. Typically refers to being pressured, busy or at your limit.

This project has me up against the wood this week.

really put butter on it

Add a lot of benefits. Don't hold back the good stuff.

If they want me to accept the job, they are going to have to really put butter on it. The current salary and benefits are not enough.
