A previous lover, one night stand or anything in between. Used when refering to a past relationship in which there is no global terminology.

Mary: Why are you averting your gaze from that Starbucks barista?

Johnny: He's a former of mine. We went out for two weeks before he stopped returning my call, so I poisoned his ferret.
