(bohl-ee) A 'bowlie' is an indie kid with a bowl haircut (hair cut with a bowl on your head), particularly popular in Glasgow in the 1980s. More generally, it is a label for people who listen to indie music (specifically indie-pop).
The term was further popularised by the Bowlie Weekender - a one-off music festival curated by Belle & Sebastian at the Pontin's Holiday camp in Camber Sands, Sussex, held Friday 23 - Sunday 25 April 1999. The event was the inspiration for All Tomorrow's Parties, a music festival held at the same venue in Sussex every year from 2000 until it moved to Butlin's Minehead in 2006.
