Pre-GPT Hero
The AI equivalent of a high school hero. Someone who made a genuinely useful contribution to machine learning before transformers took over, and has spent every waking moment since reminding the internet about it. Can be found quote-tweeting any thread about the history of LLMs, deep learning, or fine-tuning to inform strangers that they "literally did this years ago" and "nobody listened."
Distinguished from a legitimate pioneer by the frequency and urgency of self-citation, and by a telling inability to ship anything people actually use. Will surface in threads they were not tagged in. Claims credit not just for what they built, but for what everyone else should have built but didn't because they lacked the vision to listen to the Pre-GPT Hero at the time. Conveniently ignores that the people they're correcting went on to put a chat interface on it and change the world.
Nursing a grievance about institutional gatekeeping (no big lab, no academic pedigree, or no major award) and interprets every downstream success by well-resourced researchers as evidence the system failed to recognize them. Rarely stops to consider that recognition usually follows impact, and that a research paper without a product is just a timestamp.

Every time someone posts about the history of transformers, some pre-GPT hero materializes out of nowhere to explain that their 2018 blog post basically invented everything, and the only reason nobody knows is that the big labs wouldn't listen.
