North
A term the British use to mean the North of England, a region that starts somewhere around Sheffield and continues right up to the Scottish border. It includes Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and many other cities and counties besides. This is often confusing to people who live in other parts of the world, since they think of "The North" as meaning the northern part of whatever country they're in. However, being mindful that there are lots of people who live neither in their home countries nor in England, people from other countries are apt to qualify it with a geographic toponym so even foreigners will understand what they're talking about.
Czech: We're spending August up North.
Englishman: Oh, Cumberland is delightful that time of year.
Czech: Who said anything about Cumberland? We're going to Liberec.
Englishman: Oh, is that in Northumberland?
Czech: No. It's in the Czech Republic, where we both are standing right now, you provincial ninny.
