In polyamory context: non-primary partner. Polyamorous people are open to the practice of establishing and maintaining more than one intimiate relationship, which, in contrast to monogamous people, can also happen simultaniously.
NP is understood to be a partner one has an intimate relationship, but of the nature different to that of - either currently present or not - primary partner.
That does not mean that relationship and the NP partner would be any more "lesser" because of that, individual cases would wary. It will be understood to be in some form "less" though. That can be less consistent contact, less commitment, less time apent together, or less deep intimacy.
