1. Generally, a member of a French commune. Or any other kind of commune.

2. A member or supporter of the Paris Commune, one of the first historical attempts to establish a socialist state. They were brutally repressed by the French Third Republic.

3. A French apéritif (cocktail) similar to or also known as a Cardinal. It is made in a small wine glass, with 1/5th crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) and 4/5ths Beaujolais red wine, and garnished with a few blackberries.

4. A member of a ibrigade de cuisine/i (kitchen staff in a posh restaurant or hotel) who makes the meal for the restaurant staff.

2. Twenty thousand communards were massacred by the French Army.

3. Back home in the south of France they make amazing communards.

4. The communard made us a lovely meal after that long, grueling shift.
