one-upmanship wherein the participants try to outdo each other with sob stories and having the worst parents, ailment, job, life, etc.
"Oh hey, is that Jenny and Amanda?"
"Yeah, but you probably don't want to go over there. They're competing over who has the worst mental illness."
"Oh god, not the Woelympics again."
