Used with military or guys jacked up on action movies, pop smoke comes from the practice of throwing out a smoke grenade to signal/get pickup from some kind of air transport.

Hey Dave, are you going to hang around the party for a while?
No, I'm gonna pop smoke and head to Manny's...I need to get laid.
