A 1990s rock band fronted by Eric Erlanson and Courtney Love. Their first album (Pretty on the Inside) was released in 1991 and produced my Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. In 1992 Love married Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Hole was temporarily put on hold. Their sophomore album, Live Through This, was recorded with a new drummer (Patty Schemel) and bass player (Kristin Pfaff). On the eve of the album's release Cobain killed himself. Shortly after Pfaff overdosed on heroin and died. The remaining members of the band and new bass player Melissa Auf der Maur went on tour the following year and Live Through This received critical acclaim, frequently referred to as "Album of the Year." The band took a hiatus after the tour while Love pursued a career in acting. In 1998 the band released their third and final album Celebrity Skin. The album received almost as much acclaim as Live Through This and reached number eight on the charts. The band officially disbanded in 2002. Love and Auf der Maur subsequently released solo albums and Schemel now drums for Juliette and the Licks.
