An open relationship is a relationship where both partners agree to see other people. Basically, it's permission to cheat.
Jane: "I hooked up with Joey last night!"
Hope: "Aren't you with John? So isn't that cheating?"
Jane: "We have an open relationship."
Hope: "That's what I said, cheating."
Jane: "But with permission."
