hilserious

To be hilserious is to broach potentially controversial topics in a joking manner in order to be able to cover your arse with the "I was only joking" excuse.

Can also be a form of sarcasm, cf. sorry not sorry

"Honey, you know I was only joking when I said your sister obviously got the brains in your family!"

"I've got brains enough to tell when you're being hilserious you prick!"
