A rock movement that originated around Essex in England, from which many excellent performers got their start. The pub rock movement was a creative outburst that grew in reaction to the staid, creative wasteland of progressive pop culture, with its lengthy guitar/drum solos and tired drug culture/hippie imagery. It brought rock and roll back to having fun, yet didn't contain the pretentiousness of the later punk rock movmenet. Joe Strummer, Graham Parker, Wreckless Eric, Brinsley Schwarz, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Elvis Costello and others all came out of the "pub rock" scene, some redefining themselves later for commercial reasons or due to artistic growth.
Graham Parker and the Rumour was a famous band whose members came from the pub rock movement.
