Inspired by Gonzo Journalism, is a technique to designing video games. The game is partly fiction, but has truth from the perspective of the designer. Blizzard entertainment is a prime example and maybe founder of this type of game design, since almost all of their games have a lot of inside jokes and real world references in their fantasy or science fiction themes. Gaming off the game!
Blizzard used Gonzo Gaming to help inspire their games. The Starcraft series is science fiction, but aspects of the story are true and repeated in our history. Warcraft is an exaggerated example of war being the tragedy of every dimension. Finally, Diablo uses a lot of biblical references and metaphors for the bad guys, which is what it is for. Not to mention the physics engines of all video games have some aspects of Gonzo Gaming.
