To go collect/gather scrap metal (to later take & sell/cash in @ a junk/scrap yard) most of the time, collecting is done during the "grave yard" shift hours.

Example: "What did you do last night?"

"Nothin much. Went metalin for a lil' bit "

When person(s) go looking for metal (a lot of the time, it occurs between 11pm-5am) to take to the scrap yard for money $.

Fools yelling across yard to each other:

"Hey man, you ready to go metall'n ?!?"
"Ya, let's go!"
