Persian freedom fighter revolting against the Arabo-Muslim
occupation of Persia in the 9th CE.A devout Zoroasterian who fought against spread of islam in Persia.He is one the national heros of Persia.
He was eventually betrayed by his brother and captured by arab forces. He was imprisoned in Baghdad awaiting execution when he drank poison and ended his life, in order to avoid humiliation at the hands of the Caliph's executioners.
Maziar or Mah-Izad-Yar means protected by the god of the moon.
