topic laundering

The practice of using an apparently legitimate topic, event, opinion, greeting, or piece of information as a cover for the thing you actually want to communicate about yourself.

Topic laundering happens when the stated subject gives someone plausible deniability for self-promotion, thirst trapping, advertising, networking, virtue signaling, or simply reminding everyone that they exist.
A woman posts, “Does anyone else hate how expensive coffee has gotten?” alongside a perfectly lit bikini photo of herself holding an iced latte.

That is topic laundering. Nobody was brought there to discuss coffee prices.

Your realtor from six years ago texts you, “Happy birthday! Hope you have an amazing year!”

Also topic laundering. Your birthday has been professionally converted into a reason for you to remember that she sells houses.

A guy posts a long reflection about “the importance of staying disciplined” underneath a shirtless gym mirror photo.

The discipline may be sincere. The abs are the press release.

A LinkedIn user announces that their flight was delayed and somehow concludes with three paragraphs about leadership, resilience, and the company they founded.

Advanced corporate topic laundering.
