When an orator, filmmaker, artist, writer, poet, etc. references something obscure, rather than question the presenter, the audience nods and chuckles in agreement for fear of looking of stupid.
When the artist said her work was a meditation on the Osaka Conference of 1875, the gallery's guests did an uncomfortable nod and chuckle to hide their ignorance.
