Pouf

A padded circular sofa with a tall padded central conical back. Normally used in ornate hotel lobbies. Originally the pouf would be built in place around a structural column for the building. As building materials improved the center of the high back had a sturdy shelf installed. The shelf was home to a plant or piece of statuary. Its function was often used as a gathering place a landmark inside the lobby for strangers to meet.
