ACcording to the 1929 Song by Clara Smith, "Oh! Mister Mitchell", Poontang is some sort of confectionary. It's implied that Mister Mitchell is the creater of Poontang.

"Oh! Mister Mitchell, I'm crazy 'bout your sweet Poontang!"
