A person who acts as parent and guardian for a child in place of the child's natural parents but without legally adopting the child

Boy1: I love my foster parants
Boy2: Really? What about your birth parants
Boy1: They abandoned me so I don't care, my foster parents care about me enough to worry to much

Lone Survivor

Someone who is the only one left of his/her group or famliy

Soldier: "He is the only one left of his team" Captain: "That makes him the lone survivor"
Or
Man: "The fire killed her entire family" Woman: "Poor girl, she's a lone survivor"
