A piece of false, slanderous and/or mean-spirited story that somebody tells about someone else. These stories are usually told because the victim of the rumor is smarter, more popular, wealthier, more successful, harder working, or nicer than the person who is spreading the rumor.Said rumor spreader often spreads remors becuase he has become jealous and wants to hurt the person who he is spreading a rumor about.
After John Doe publicly embarrased Matt Snuffy by defeating him in the student government election, Matt tried to avenge his defeat by spreading a rumor that John Doe was a stalker.

Sometimes it is hard to tell who started the rumor, who believes the rumor, or who heard the rumor but they are false 89% of the time. People often ruin reputations by these vicious rumors and the reason why they spread them is often unknown. You really shouldn't listen to rumors because you often look stupid if the information you received was false or wrong.
