While it is true that the Republican party used to be the party of Lincoln, and that a higher percentage of Republicans voted for the 1964 civil rights bill than Democrats, modern day Republicans are very different.

In 1964 Democrats from northern states voted almost unanimously for the civil rights bill, Democrats from the south voted almost unanimously against it. The Democrats who opposed civil rights were southern conservatives, they would be Republicans today.

Strom Thurmond was a Democrat, he left the Democratic party in 1964 specifically because he opposed civil rights for blacks. Charles Pickering, the conservative judge appointed to a federal appeals court by GW Bush during a senate recess was a Democrat and switched to the Republican party in 1964, specifically because he opposed civil rights for African Americans. Many Republicans who supported civil rights became Democrats in 1964.

Look at a map of former slave states and compare it to a map of the 2004 electoral college results. Notice a pattern? Ohio, Indiana and Iowa changed from free states in 1861 to Republican states in 2004, Maryland and Delaware changed from slave states in 1861 to Democratic states in 2004. Except for those 5 states, the maps match up exactly.

A person of American origin who obstensibly votes for a certain political party called Republicans. There are in fact three distinctive types of Republicans:
1) those who call themselves fiscal conservatives and focus primarily on promoting free enterprise, lowering of federal and state taxes, and cutting government regulations to allow the market more leeway; 2) those who call themselves social conservatives, who focus on promoting religious orthodoxy in both a social and political environs, the curtailing of 'permissive' acts of sexuality, and generally promoting the vague standard of 'family values'; and 3) serious evil f-cks who take both aspects of 1) and 2) to extreme levels, who have no tolerance for others of dissenting opinions, who declare everyone and their parents 'traitors' at the slightest provocation, and are more than enjoying themselves with the thought of dragging the entire planet into Hell.
On no account should you allow a Type-3 Republican to read 'Weekly Standard' to you. Not because anything he says will convince you but because he'll start foaming at the mouth and you'll have to clean up the mess.
Well, yes, I'm a repubican but I'm from the wing of the party that actually tries to be nice to people.

A narcissistic American citizen who hates the poor and the less fortunate for the discomfort he feels when he witnesses their misery. He relieves his anxiety by lashing out at them in a primal fashion and bonds only with others whom he deems worthy and who uplift their sorry self-images by further degrading the disadvantaged. Republicans are most often ignorant and poorly informed because they lack the humility necessary for true learning.
If the apostle Luke was alive today he wouldn't have been a Republican because he said "Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none."

Voting Republican:
:::Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.
:::Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.
:::Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.
:::The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.
:::A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
:::The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.
:::If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.
:::A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
:::Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.
:::Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
:::A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.
:::Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.
:::The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business.
:::Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
:::Supporting "Executive Privilege" for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born (in perpetuity.)
:::What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.
:::Oh, and now you stand up for your republican Pedophile buddies and instead talk about CLINTON!!

Who votes for republicans? What kind of people would?

Some one who believes in working hard for their money and thinks that other people should too. Someone who also thinks that hand outs should only occur when there are truly deserved and not just because people don't feel like working or doing anything. Someone who also believes that we should strive to be a debt free country and stop borrowing money from other countries who could potentially own us. We pay back who we borrow from and work hard to never owe anyone.
It is our republican duty to pay off the national debt and become a self sufficient country once again.

Republican: One who is of the Grand Old Party (GOP) of the United States. They believe in the republican system of government. One who is for upholding the constitution unlike Democrats who want to destroy it. A republican believes in less government control and oversight in our daily lives. The Republican party believes in free market capitalism, the opposite of what the Democrats believe. They would like America to become a socialist police state where welfare, out of control spending, and complete government control flourish. Republicans want to simplify the tax code so everyone pays the same flat rate. For the logically impaired, paying the same proportion of your income is your "fair share."
Wow that guy's idea's for the nation actually make logical sense, he must be a republican.

One of the newest dirty words in the English language.
In some quarters, Republican has become a dirty word.

A collection of goose stepping low lifes. These people put the wealthy, special interests, and Republican Christianity first, and the American people - especially the poor and vulnerable - last.

Cut taxes on the rich so they'd have more money. Cut social support for people. Throw money into the security money hole. Fight blood soaked oil wars. Try to privatize and wreck social security. Strip Americans of their basic Constitutional and Human Rights. These are a few things that Republicans have done.
What do you call a busload of Republicans going through the gates of a maximum security prison?

A good start!
