When happy members of online forums become jaded and cynical enough to be 'promoted' as moderators.
The membership, not the inductee, then appear different, no longer deserving of mutual respect and admiration, but become merely a source of annoyance to the staff. Mods become distant and unattainable.

WoW, He used to be a laugh until he was modded, now he's just angry all the time, and has no time for us little people, or even to post in teh fora.
