The act of crafting a sympathetic, morally gray fictional character, especially one with a tragic or abusive back story, and leading the audience to believe the character will atone and rise above their circumstances, then "subverting expectations" by driving the character to the madness they tried to avoid, resulting in the character meeting a gruesome end. That asshole from Voltron who happens to be hot and an asshole at the same time.
The worst part is he is an actual asshole, he is by far the only person that makes you believe that he is a good guy now but then betrays the paladins (for most people. Other saw it coming from the start)
