Fauxcial Media

Contrived, inauthentic or misleading use of social media resources such as online communities, blogs, Twitter profiles, Wikipedia entries, Facebook pages, etc. to manipulate or to create a false or misleading perception of a company, organization, candidate or cause.

Fauxcial Media is the "Web 2.0" equivalent of atroturfing i.e., the creation of fake grassroots campaigns in PR/Public Relations.
WHAT CONSTITUTES FAUXCIAL MEDIA:

• Businesses pretending to be bloggers.
• Businesses pretending to be journalists.
• Businesses pretending to be “Joe Blow” in order to flog their products in blog comments.

EXAMPLES OF FAUXCIAL MEDIA:

- Cisco's Human Network - wrote all Cisco-related Wikipedia entries; had vloggers try to write about the Human Network. Got themselves to #2 in Google organic search

- Whole Foods CEO John Mackey used an alias to ding detractors on forums

- "Wal-Marting Across America" used a real journalist and real photographer, but set them up as simply Wal-Mart fans, traveling across America, parking their RV at Wal-Mart parking lots.

fauxball player

Man or boy who pretends to be a member of a top football team to impress girls.
Boy: "I really shouldn't be drinking at all. Coach would kill me if he knew."

Girl: "Coach? What do you play?"

Boy: "I play football at OSU or similar."
A pejorative term used regionally in Vancouver, BC, to denote the falseness or fraudulence of the "New" Cobalt. The Cobalt was once a world renowned hardcore music venue catering to the Punk & Metal scenes. It nurtured the early careers of countless local and touring bands as well as provided a place for established bands to play in an authentic atmosphere with a truly wicked sound system. Now under new management the Cobalt has reopened as a den of posers and tryhards happily throwing dance parties on the ashes of Vancouver's music scene.
Trendy Hipster: "Hey Man, are gonna check out the dance party at the Cobalt this weekend?"

Metalhead: "FUCK THAT!!! DEATH TO THE FAUXBALT!!!"
