\`ex`ur'bi'a\ n. The area outside a city, though much farther out than suburbia or the suburbs. (See exurbs.)

The farther out they went from the city, the sparser and sparser the houses became, especially when they reached exurbia.

An area, sometimes a commuter town, beyond suburbia that is typically inhabited by upper middle class or affluent whites. See also: exurb, bedroom community
