A horrifically boring place to live. The "line" between upstate New York and downstate New York is the point at which you believe the landscape becomes more rural than what you are used to, so various definitions exist.
You know how upstaters say there's more to New York than New York City? Well what the hell are they talking about?! I go to college at SUNY Binghamton and I swear, there is NOTHING HERE.

Upstate New York refers to that portion of New York State which is not part of the New York City Metropolitan area. There is some debate as to the southernmost point of Upstate New York, but a general consensus exists that anything north of Westchester and Rockland Counties qualifies.

Upstate New York differs from Long Island, New York City, and Westchester/Rockland in a number of ways, among them: 1) Lower population density; 2) Lower socioeconomic status; 3) More conservative politics; 4) Midwestern accent and culture; 5) Colder winters with much greater snow totals.
Upstate New York has been in decline, economically, for many decades. Many of its cities, such as Schenectady and Buffalo, have experienced substantial de-population since the mid-20th Century. As a result, many Upstate New York residents harbor a great deal of resentment towards "Downstate".
It snows in Upstate New York, almost non-stop, from November to April.

Most intelligent people know that "Upstate New York" has traditionally been the land north of Albany. Just because something is "up" from NYC, doesn't make it part of "Upstate New York". You might be going "upstate" or "up the state" but you will never be in "Upstate New York" while visiting Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie, White Plains, etc.

And think about this - what do you think people in Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie, etc say when they are visiting Lake George, for example. "Oh we're going to Up-Upstate New York" ???? Of course not! That's because Rhinebeck/Poughkeepsie/White Plains people do NOT LIVE IN UPSTATE NEW YORK!

Think rationally --- and read a textbook. Maybe you'll learn something about the history of New York (and the geography).

i'm from beekman new york, its about 10 miles from the shithole known as poughkeepsie. i go to a school where all the black kids act ghetto and say "whatup nigga" but live in 700,000 dollar houses. upstate is boring and is where most of the criminal activity in the state goes down. if you ever come to dutchess county stay away from poughkeepsie not because its dangerous
( except in the section 8 project developments, which strangly make up the whole city), because the hookers on main street and washington boulevard suck dick like retarded todlers. just a heads up.

Anywhere north or east of the areas of NYC and Long Island. Contains The Great Escape theme park in the village of Lake George, Fun Spot in the city Queensbury, and Camp Chingachgook on the shores of Lake George. Has lots of wiggers in the Alvany metro area. Not many hicks. Very rural. Kind of like a mini version of North Dakota.
I live in Round Lake, a village in Upstate New York.

To all the morons on here and the pretentious Westchester County residents that don't want to be lumped into the upstate category: go kill yourselves. First of all, anything north of the New York City, not its suburbs, but New York City is considered upstate New York.

Second, I don't know why everybody thinks that people who live in Manhattan are so special. People who live in Manhattan are not even real New Yorkers, they are transplants from the mid-west or other lame regions of the country. The real tough New Yorkers with the famous attitude that we all get stereo-typed as live outside Manhattan in boroughs like Brooklyn and the Bronx. Outer Boroughs, here's a news flash: you have nothing in common with the rich elitists who live in the city. No one cares about who you are or your slummy neighorhood. New York gets all the lime light because of Broadway, 42nd Street, Wall Street,the Upper East Side, etc. No one thinks that Queens is where its at, so quit being such arrogant bitches about being from New York City, cause you're really not. Newark and Hoboken are as NY as you. Your crummy boroughs were incorporated into greater metro NY to expand the political power of the city. You and your stupid borough are not important.
Upstate NY is a term that does no good because it does not precisely define a specific area, instead it lumps an entire region north of NYC together. In reality not all part of upstate New York share the same cultural, political, or social characteristics. As proof spend one weekend in Buffalo, and then travel all the way across the state to Albany. Then head all the way up to Plattsburg. Each of those areas are different from the rest. Upstate NY is more of a generic term that covers a broad range of geographic subjects.
Upstate New York=Syracuse, Utica, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, Yonkers, Westchester County, Hudson Valley, Thousand Islands.

NYC=5 boroughs

Long Island=Nassau and Suffolk Counties
