I looked at the other definitions, and there seems to few people on here that actually know what they're talking about. So I thought I'd add mine, with a bit of history and background information...

1976 saw the birth of punk, bringing with it many sub-genres, sub-sub-genres, and sub-sub-sub-sub-genres. In the early 80s, punk had branched off into several different styles, and ways of taking the genre. In 1981 there was a large amount of "hardcore" bands emerging from the D.C. scene. One of these bands were called "Minor Threat", who had a very vibrant, and melodic sound.

Nearing the end of 1983, the band "Minor Threat" broke up, after the band seemed to "run out of steam", and their last 7" single "Salad Days" in 1984 finally killed the band, and the DC hardcore scene.

After that new bands emerged, taking the genre their own way. 1984 showed the release of "Zen Arcade", an album by minneapolis band "Husker Du". This interpretation showed much more powerful, intense vocals with slow, melancholy and more melodic song writing.

In Spring 1984, D.C. Hardcore band "Rites of Spring" emerged, taking inspiration from the earlier hardcore scene. The band brought a totally new vocal approach to Husker Du's original style.

Summer 1985 became known as the "revolution summer" when a whole wave of hardcore bands emerged from the D.C. scene such as Gray Matter, Soulside, Ignition and Dag Nasty. Few bands retained the original fast paced, hardcore style proposed by "Rites of Spring" and "Husker Du" but took a much more droney, melodic approach to the genre.

These bands were then labelled the "D.C. Sound" or "D.C. Hardcore", and some of them were labelled "emo".

It was never suggested by Rites Of Spring that the term "emo" was short for anything. Although it has been proposed that emo was short for "emotive hardcore" or "emotionally charged hardcore punk" in a 1985 flipside interview with the band they claimed they were "not a punk rock band" and it was never mentioned in the text that they were "emotional" or "emotive" although the term "emo" was used several times.

Again, people took the genre several ways. Some people took an "Indie-rock" approach to the genre, while others retained a "post hardcore" style.

Many emo bands were poorly paid, underground, and rarely heard of, and few records were ever released around the genre. Which is probably why today it is so easily mistaken and misunderstood.

The "D.C. hardcore scene" grew, and with it, a stereotype fashion. People with a "Mop-top" haircut, skinny t-shirts and old trainers became a classic "D.C. hardcore scene" cliche. However, not all of these were "emo fans" nor were they in any way "emo's". It is suggested that this idea was taken, and progressed through the nineties to a much more "geeky" look nowadays.

However, emo is a genre of music, argue all you like, your still wrong. Saying "I am an emo" is like saying "I am a jazz", which is not possible. Emo has been heavily marketed by magazines (Kerrang etc.) and a totally wrong idea of the genre is now being spread across youths.

The early 90s saw a last breath for emo, with a much more softer, "Indie-rock" take on the genre. After that, the rest is history. It's a shame the genre was dragged through the gutter like that.
Emo - Rites Of Spring, Dag Nasty, SDRE, Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi...

What? - GUYS IN GIRL PANTS R HOT!!!11

Anything to do with 14 year old girls instantly becomes void of the possibility of it having anything to do with emo.

Emo. There are many diffrent types of emos. I would know, I happen to be "emo". Here is a list of the diffrent types of emos:

The Fake Emo(Known as the "Wannabee Emo"): These kids listen to Teenagers over and over and wear black, dye their hair black and sometimes (NOT ALL THE TIME, DONT STEROTYPE DAMMIT) cut themselves so that they seem emo. These kids are not emo. They are annoying and make a bad name for the "true" emo.

The Real Emo: This is someone who probably has some sort of tragedy happen, such as parents being alcoholics or being depressed because of a mental condition (Personal Experience). These kids should not be made fun of because many of them are going through extremely hard times. But, sadly, there are people who don't even bother to look and see that these people may really be in trouble! Heck, its very hard to find a real emo because most of them are in the closet about their emoness.

The Real, Hardcore Emo: These are the worst. These are the emos that have been real for close to a month and they begin to nosedive. They cut deeper and they become increasingly mean to freinds at school or to people in the workplace. They may also start burning or pinching or some other form of Self-Injury. These kids should NEVER be made fun of. They are, many times, mentally unstable and many will attempt or have many thoughts about killing themselves. If you know about someone that is cutting or talking of suicide, they are becomeing a hardcore emo, and they have a slight chance of living.

Please, don't make fun of emo. It's just cruel. I was made fun of as an emo, and then I went to a rebalitaion center for a month, which felt like jail. I was set up with a professional and finally got back to normal. I'm taking perscribtion meds to feel better. Emo isn't a joke. It can be dangerous.
The Fake Emo:

Faker: Dude, I'm so depressed today! I wanna cut and cry to MCR!!
Normal People: You wannabee fucktard. Get real or go pretend some more.

The Real Emo:
Real Emo: I wish my parents wouldn't fight, they make me so sad, and I don't have anyone to talk to.
Normal Person: Dude, that sucks!
Ignorant Person*: HAHA!! EMO!! YOU SUCK!! GO SLIT YOUR WRISTS AND DIE YOU FUCKING EMO!!!!1!!!!

The Hardcore Emo:
Hardcore: I can't take this man, I'm so sick and I want to kill myself. I can't take the pain.
Normal: Dude, get help!! Don't kill yourself!
Ignorant Person: HAHA!! EMO!! YOU SUCK!! GO SLIT YOUR WRISTS AND DIE YOU FUCKING EMO!!!!1!!!!

emo is a slang term used to describe teenagers today.
it is popular to be emo because of the all the radiant attention you get from it,guys wear skinny jeans, have jet black hair(sometimes brown-dark brown),can barely see through their hair and are always flicking it to see clearly, they consider this sexy.
girls love emo guys and only date them,it was first a catch of the millenium now it's so normal you can practically marry one without hassle.
mp3/ipod lists my chemical romance, panic! at the disco, afi, fall out boy and some other random unknown 'emo' bands to show how intellectual they are.
emo kids are faking, not a single real one exists anymore,if they dye their hair, they're faking.
emo is practically over now, people consider it embarassing and are desperate to either cut their hair or grow their hair back again....sad,when they were the ones bragging 'emo 4 life'...

my question....what's next?
emo kid: i totally regret doing this now...(chucks out mcr cd)
emo girl: i can't wait to grow my hair again...what was i thinking?
former emo kid: i hate emos they are so gay and dumb and...(you get the idea)

Emo meaning emotional is a new craze across the young 'uns! emos can be spotted by a greasy fringe, skinny jeans, hoodies and a general grunting distain for those around them. Emo gangs try to act depressed and generally buy a copy of marilyn mansuns greatest hits. They pretend to know everything about punk and rock (even though most of them weren't born when kurt cobain died)they wear t-shirts saying 'kurt cobain died for us' which in short is a pretencious pile of wank that's spread across our society! Don't get me wrong I appreciate that everybody has problems, and i am by no means a chav... (they're all scum and should be shot!)... but come on people. We are british, we do not parade around showing our emotions and slitting our wrists and acting depressed. We as a nation are supposed to have the stiff upper lip and generally repressed attitude to our feelings!
It needs no example just look at a group of depressive teens and you'll see the emo crowd.
