a "prince" of the Catholic Church; cardinals elect the pope. They are usually bishops. They wear scarlet dresses.
Are the St. Louis cardinals named after birds or the "princes" of the Catholic Church?

The Cardinals or Cardinalidae are a family of passerine birds found in North and South America. The South American cardinals in the genus Paroaria are placed in another family, the Thraupidae (previously placed in Emberizidae).

It's a bird...

Nickname of sports teams at Leland Stanfurd Junior University. Named after the color, hence teams are called "the cardinal" as opposed to "the Cardinals" The name was chosen due to a lack of creativity on campus after the "Indians" name was terminated due to political correctness.
Person 1: What's your favorite college football team?

Stanfurd Fan: The cardinal

Person 1: I asked for your favorite college football team, not your favorite color...
