Depressing, yet somehow optimistic. Typically used when something bad has happened and a pathetic attempt is made to be optimistic about it. It often leads to feeling more depressed.
This would be depressingly optimistic:
Someone you've had a crush on that you couldn't work up the nerve to talk to dies. Trying to be optimistic, you tell yourself, "Well, at least I don't have to stress over trying to ask her out.". Depression sets in when you realize how much you wanted to try.

Looking at the bright and disturbingly hilarious side of a situation while never sacrificing the reality of that situation
Some say the divorce rate for marriage is going up while I say the death rate for marriage is going down. That is what optimistic nihilism is.

When one stays optimistic while being depressed (usually because of exams or work related projects that need to be done on or for the next day).

Maddie: Do you think Chester the bunny will make it?
Joe: Ab-so-fucking-lutely. I only nicked him with the weedwacker/bunnynicker.
Maddie: But he hasn't breathed in more than a week.
Lisa: Joe, I think you're Optimist primus.
