There are a lot of interpretations of the word Chalga. As a matter of fact it is turkish by origin and means:Turkish instrumental music. For about twenty years the bulgarians name their pop-folk music with this word.
Wedding day- pop-folk(chalga)song
The mountain is my mother, but my father was the strong wind.
My brother is the heavy sea,the overgrowing grasses are my sisters.

Dont think that everyone in BG listens to Chalga . Why everyone talks bullshits ? Have you ever been to BG , you fuckin' Americans ? If you haven't been then stop talking about Bulgaria. You think that u are too smart and cleaver and everybody else are some stupid country people ? That's not true . You will probabbly laugh at my English but I'm proud that at least I talk it !? Can u say one word in Bulgarian ... ? We use the "CHALGA" only when we have partys with a lot of alcohol, when we form groups and when we wanna have some laugh . We have beautiful Bulgarian folk music , that u will never have ! Listen to songs like "Moia strana , moia Bulgaria" (a great song of Emil Dimitrov) and then u will know just a lill' about Bulgaria . At the end I will give you a text of a song which is made to fuck with the Chalga :) Aide pichove mir !

This is a music genre which is very popular in Bulgaria. It is also known as Pop-Folk. The 'chalga' has many things in common with Turkish and Serbian music, but can also include some elements from Bulgarian folklore. Anyway it has typical oriental elements (inharited from the times of the Ottoman Empire which ruled the region for about five centuries), combined with a modern pop sounding.

This type of music is generally listened at parties and people who have drunk lots of alchohol enjoy it very much. This can be a logical explanation for the senceless or even vulgar lyrics in many such songs, performed usually by gypsies. This genre creates songs for entertaining the masses (and probably many people do entertain themselves listening to such senceless songs). Many people lebel those senceless songs 'chalga' without realizing that 'chalga' is actually the type of music, which is typical for the whole Balkan region, and believe me, there are songs of high quality with nice lyrics (usualy about love relationships, searching for the 'one' and etc).
here is one nice 'chalga' song.
translated from "Kamelia - Ima Lyubov" (There is love)
...
there is love, there is love
and only love remains
and this love, and this love
gives me a new life

only the love warms your heart
and it starts beating madly
only love, just love
and nothing else matters
...
------------------------------
and one senceless

translated from "Orkestar Trastenik - Topcheto"(the Trastenik Orchestra - The Little Ball)
INFO: the song lyrics are based on a popular game amongst Bulgarian gypsies which includes a little rubber ball and 3 caps. The performer starts rolling the ball very quickly under the caps and mixes them. Then a player has to choose a cap and wins if the ball is under the cap. While mixing the caps, the gypsie performer says: "here it is, here it is not, where is the little ball". This game is also popular with lots of tricks and cheats by the performer (which includes hiding the ball while mixing, so that all the caps are empty)
...
here it is, here it is not
did you see mister where is the little ball
here it is, here it is not
did you see mister where is the little ball

I give gold , I give money, I give gollars
just to see the little ball
I give gold , I give money, I give gollars
just to see the little ball

It's a rather simple kind of music... some people like it, others don't. It's only natural to be that way. In fact there's no big difference between chalga and pop music. The texts are mainly plain and even funny, but nice songs do exist. It's just a matter of time and effort finding and accepting them. I know I still haven't ^^
Look, it's none of your business
How we're living together with him
Maybe he's bad or anytning...
I just want him that way

Look, it's none of your business
If we're gonna stay together
Maybe we don't understand one another,
But we'd die for each other

The favourite kind of music of most Bulgarians. Its origins come from Turkey,Greece and the other countries on the Balkan peninsula. At first(during the 90's) chalga singers copied famous songs from their collegues from the countries mentioned above, but nowadays more and more Bulgarian singers prefer authors songs. One of the most famous chalga singers in Bulagria are:Mara-the Opener,Azis-the Homo,Gloria-the Skeleton,Gergana-the Silicone and many others(even more than you can see on MTV!).All of them, except for Azis are produced by Mitio-Payner-a
a part of Azis'chalga hit"Dui,Dui,Dui,listen to my hui,oops-song,please tell me(x2)...You should be jealous, you should swear,I want you to dream about me,Dui,Dui,Dui..."and so on:)

I consider some of the definitions I read were rather extreme. Of course, pop-folk is not a serious kind of music, it is dedicated to bring lively mood and to be listened to when you are druk. And please, don't tell me that you, out of Bulgaria don't drink! I don't consider that chalga lyrics are worse than hip-hop lyrics. I even consider chalga is better than rap, because, at least, pop-folk singers don't consider themselves to be very important. They are slef-ironic and never pretend to be "bad boys" or "people from the ghetoo" etc. ! And, after all, whatever you say, chalga is a powerful kind of music, because it simply captures everyone! I can't explain it to myself - may be it's because it's very lively, joyous and full of precious simlisity. It doesn't matter at all, because it really impresses everyone - the very fact is enough to proove chalga's influence!
And get ready, because when we enter European Union you will have to put up with chalga, and after that you will start to like it, and we will remind you what you have said about chalga!
European Man

At first a bit "rutsa-rutsa",
after that a bit "frutsa-fruts"
and in the end "op-op-op"
I'm ready for Europe!
And big Europe will be a car for a couple
and from Rim to Chelopek (famous BG city) everyone will be dancing "kiutchek"
And Europe will be shaking, we will change it's preferences and it will transmit every day Intervision for me! :D
