The biggest waste of land on Earth. Low density residential areas, zoned so that the only way you can get to a commercial area is by motor vehicle. Also zoned so that the only direction the house can be added onto is towards the back (never mind the fact that most suburban houses sit far from the street.) The back yard is often devoted to a swimming pool, dog run, deck, patio, football field, baseball diamond, or other means of degrading the land's productivity.
Usually covered in ranch houses, many built on concrete slabs (permanently rendering the land they sit on useless) and almost always landscaped using the builder's special, the adjoining wooded areas have often been removed after bored teenagers get caught going there to drink beer and smoke pot. Strip malls are the most common commercial establishments, followed by big box retailers such as Wal-Mart and then mega malls.
Suburbia can be located within a central city (depending on what is encompased within it's boundaries) or some other part of a metropolitan area.

The protaganist in Green Day's 2004 album "American Idiot." JoS is a representation of everything the typical American outcasted youth is. He does drugs ("and Mary Jane to keep me insane, while doing someone else's cocaine") and drinks ("to fall in love and fall in debt, to alcohol and cigarettes") He's depressed, unloved and hates his Mom (and his step-dad, Brad)

Jesus then leaves his home in the suburbs to go to the city. There he meets St. Jimmy, and his love interest which we only know as Whatsername. St. Jimmy is revealed to be a figment of JoS's imagination, constructed by him to protect Jesus from his weak self (almost like the wall in Pink Floyd's 'the Wall'). St. Jimmy "commits suicide" which leaves Jesus to face the facts after Whatsername leaves him, and grows up. Jesus gets a job, gives up drinking and such, and begins going insane. He then returns home with his friends and loses contact with Whatsername.

The main character of Green Day's album "American Idiot," a rock opera in which the characters represent the youth of America in a modern-day metropolis filled with rhetoric, lies, and censorship. The entire story is an exploration of the main characters' thoughts and interactions with each other that takes place over the time span of approximately one year.
Jesus of Suburbia represents the average young American who doesn't quite fit in and has "disciples", or a clique consisting of the rest of the unheard youth who don't feel as though they fit into the well-established structures of the corporate American society.
