Long Island is an island located to the east of Manhattan, stretching in the northeasterly direction. It is home to four counties, of which two -- Brooklyn and Queens -- are Boroughs of New York City. In political and cultural contexts, however, the name "Long Island" refers to the portion of the island occupied by the remaining two counties: Nassau and Suffolk.

One of America's most vivid examples of urban sprawl, Long Island was mostly rural until the late 1940's, at which time developers began radically transforming its landscape into what became an endless sea of cookie-cutter housing and strip malls. It is characterized by overcrowding, insane transportation costs and high property taxes. Although it is socioeconomically diverse, and serene rural scenery can still be found there by those who look very hard, it is a quintessential American suburb in that it combines the worst of the urban and rural worlds: all the crowding and expense of living in the city with none of the cultural sophistication or tolerance; all the dullness of the country, with none of the bucolic charm.

Long Islanders are known for their distinctive accent, which is best described as exceedingly nasal and guttural. For example "long" is pronounced "lawn'", "coffee" is "cawffy", and someone whose name is Mark would actually be called "Mawk".
My friends bought a house in Long Island, and now their tax payments are almost as high as their mortgage payments!

a long islander has the best of both worlds--the greatest city in the world and some nice beaches all within 15-20 miles. the only people that resent long islanders are people who live in shitty areas of the city...people who wish they could afford a park avenue address...people who know they could never afford long island real estate. so basically, deal with it. classy areas of nyc don't want you and neither does long island.
people from east new york or o-zone park hate long islanders because they're jealous that they can't afford manhattan or long island.

People who reside in Long Island, New York. People who live around 30 minutes away from the city(NYC), people who are awesome. People who love good food and shopping. Half of them have an accent similar to a typical New Yorker accent while others have only a slight New York accent. Great people. Very friendly..well, for the most part.

ok for all you people who say that if you dont live in the 5 boroughs then your upstate then your just plain retarded.. i live in manhasset which is literally 10 minutes away from bayside which is queens, so yea unless they are hicks in bayside which i highly doubt there are NO hicks 10 minutes away.. just because it is considered long island doesnt mean that if you live in manhasset you arent a real new yorker or dont have an accent or watever the hell the rest of you illiterate idiots who waste their time on this say, this is supposed to tell you a definition of a place, not judge it and put in your own opinions so get a life and stop arguing about this and most importantly get your damn facts straight.. because dont try to tell me that you or your friends or parents or people you know dont come to manhasset to go to the americana.. because you DO.. and its not hicky and we dont have farms just cause its on long island

Actually, people in Chicago refer to southern Illinois as DOWNSTATE, although they harber to same contempt as New Yorkers when they say Upstate.
