A male who is skilled at manipulating ("playing") others, and especially at seducing women by pretending to care about them, when in reality they are only interested in sex. Possibly derived from the phrases "play him for a fool", or "play him like a violin". The term was popularized by hip-hop culture, but was commonly recognized among urban American blacks by the 1970s.
A certain class of low-rent, slack-jawed fuckups has decided that backstabbing and misogyny are totally radical, so the word is sometimes used as a compliment or term of endearment between male friends, as in the greeting "what's up, player?".

Listless, fiendish, mercenary scumbags that have no sense of reality. Usually males. They ruin other people's lives just because they can, and probably would not be in existence if people would stop allowing themselves to be used by these scumbags. They only crave sex and money from others, and never had the need to make friends because they're just TOO DAMN SPECIAL!
I just dated a player. I gave him 20,000 dollars after he told me that he needed to go to school. He constantly forced/coerced me into having sex with him all the time in order to get any attention. He squandered the 20,000 right in front of my face, and never went to school. He recently moved and blocked my number, and I've heard that he is now wanted for fleeing the state while on probation. Phew! I'm glad I'm out of that 'relationship'!
