SUR can be an acronym which stands for Southern United Raza or it's a spanish word which means "the South"... as in Southern California. Mostly in relation to Southern California Latin gangs.

Surena or Sureno is a member of any Southern California Latin gang that has proven him or herself to the "big homie" in State or Federal Prison by the means of slicing, stabbing, choking, beating, smashing, etc etc one of the listed: no good piece of shit, snitch, rapist, child molester, buster, tinto (blacks), etc etc. It is a great honor to be considered a Sureno/Surena for a Latin gang member and they'll often have it tattooed once he or she get's back to GP yard or somewhere they have access to a tattoo machine.
"Ay, that girl Crazy is a down ass Surena... did you see her slicing that buster's neck right below the tower???"

In prison and jail, when someone needs a light for cigarette or weed... we call it lucy. This is because the tip of a match or a lighted wick is red like the actress Lucille Ball from I Love Lucy... or we sometimes say, "Pass me a red headed bitch."

In terms of California Latin gangs, Sureno or Southern California Latin gang member will call the Norteno or Northern California Latin gang member a buster. This is because Buster means someone that is unwilling to comply with your will. The Norteno have for years shown great resistence toward the Mexican Mafia or the EME. They don't pay their taxes, they show no respect and they feel that they are independent. This is why there is so much animosity between the Surenos and the Nortenos.
