(noun) A political orientation, also known as centrist, that seeks a middle road between liberal and conservative, a balanced political outlook. True moderates take varying positions on matters based on independence of thought, though many false moderates are merely timid conservatives or liberals.
A typical moderate takes more liberal stances on civil-liberties issues such as gay rights, abortion, immigration and diversity, and separation of church and state, as well as an active promotion of social causes by the government. Yet, he seeks to do so in more fiscally conservative ways, relying less on taxation and regulation and more on private initiative.
