a phenomenon first coined on stan twitter, recognizing the gradual decline of originality and organic talent, or “selling out” in a local drag scene, due to the increasing popularity and exposure of the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise and their adjacent celebrity drag queens. As new drag performers arrive in local scenes, the more they begin to adopt personality traits and behaviours from queens they see on RuPaul’s Drag Race, either out of their own complete lack of individual style and personality in their drag, from feeling pressured by other queens, or from the overarching collective pipe dream of possibly landing a spot on a future season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Common behaviours among queens affected by rupaulification include deathdropping, overuse of AAVE, saying “yass” or “okurr” nine hundred times a minute, infighting, harbouring sexual predators, and creating an extremely unwelcoming and divisive air to the local drag community.
the rupaulification of Toronto drag has left us with 100+ local twinks with bleached hair who are delusional to believe they will ever grace a ‘Meet The Queenspromo advert.
