Predream

Predreaming is a hypnagogic state before being fully asleep, which occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (Stage 1 of non-REM sleep). This state can produce vivid, dream-like visions, sounds, or sensations while you're still partially conscious. These experiences are often fragmented, surreal, or involuntary, lasting seconds to minutes.

For example, you might "see" fleeting images, like faces or landscapes, or "hear" snippets of conversation before fully drifting off. This isn't true dreaming (which typically occurs in REM sleep, 90+ minutes into a sleep cycle), but it feels dream-like. Techniques like meditation or visualization can enhance these experiences, sometimes used by artists or writers for inspiration.
I predream nearly every night. The act of predreaming can make you a predreamer.

The concept of "predreaming" as dreaming before being fully asleep in the hypnagogic state, which occurs during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (Stage 1 of non-REM sleep). Clara, a self-proclaimed predreamer, claimed she could dream up lottery numbers in the hazy moments before sleep. One night, she saw a vivid hypnagogic vision of six numbers, scribbled them down, and played them—only to win a lifetime supply of pickled herring instead of cash. She now swears her predreams are cursed by a mischievous herring spirit. Her friends still laugh, but they never turn down her "lucky" fish sandwiches.
