idealistic action which can cause troubling consequences in an non-ideal world.

(etymology - comes from people who voted for Ralph Nader since he was the best candidate, but since we don't live in anything close to an ideal world/democracy caused the troubling consequences of two Bush terms.)

To inflict equal damage on yourself while attempting to harm an adversary. Much like presidential candidate Ralph Nader did to himself and Al Gore in the 2000 election.
