A false summit a place, outcome, or experience which at the time felt like a final objective or longed-for goal, but which turns out to not to be, and makes you feel even worse as you realise how far away the real goal may be.

I used a different agent to make the polymer and immediately got a positive readout on the chromatograph, but my excitement was short-lived as I realised it was a fummit and the instrument was only picking up the reducing agent not the polymer.
