An almost universal way to say "thank you" in the North Caucasus, although used mainly by Avars and Chechens.
The old Chechen woman's arm was grazed by a shot from an angry Chechen jihadi's rifle, and she muttered "barkalla" as she was pulled out of harm's way by the Russian reporter.
