Barent is a name originating during the early middle ages in Scandinavia, Svalbard (Norway) and Russia. There is a common misconception that it's meaning is linked to the sea, or "stormy sea" in some translations. This error is mainly due to the connection to Willem Barentsz, the Dutch navigator, cartographer and explorer for whom the Barents Sea is named after.

Barent in it's original meaning is usually the youngest or last child who is expected to work in the homestead and forsake the fortune and inheritance of the eldest son. Due to this, the name has become a synonym for househusband or one portraying homosexual traits.
