1. Failure of attempted empathy.
2. The act of empathizing with another individual, but failing due to circumstances beyond your control.

I attempted to explain to my recent ex-girlfriend that I know how she feels in our situation, because I've been in the same position in the past. That attempathy backfired badly, because she thought I was measuring her against another past ex-girlfriend.

An empty attempt to debate someone over something they will never change their mind on.

I know that article probably won't change their mind, but at least you made an attempty.
