A problem-solving strategy that often makes tedious computation superfluous, by thinking from the end result. Also known as "salmon strategy."
In a knock-out tennis tournament with 32 players, how many matches must be played before there is a winner? Using the "work backwards" strategy, since there are 32 players and only one winner, 31 of them must have lost their games, so 31 matches were played.
