The inheritor of britpop. Having taken musical influences from the 70's onwards (notably Lou Reed, Bowie, Dylan and the Stones) the contemporary British indie scene has spawned a new genre in the face of another attempted US invasion. A rock and roll sound with a more sex-infused gritty twist, less of the swaggering laddish intent of the britpop 90's era.
The Libertines were the initial trailblasers of Brit-beat. Bands such as Razorlight, Bloc Party, Kasabian, the Cribs, Dirty Pretty Things and the Arctic Monkeys have cemented the Brit-beat scene with their varied sounds and distinctive style, with artists such as Eden James, Wolfmother and the Ronelles possibly setting the agenda for the future.
