Acadumbic

Share definition Flag
Someone who is well-read and knowledgeable in a very specific subject area, and probably has a very high level qualification to prove it, but displays very little common sense or intelligence in other respects, and finds it difficult to grasp basic concepts.
The committee is made up of 16 acadumbics, none of whom really understand what their contribution needs to be, but have a very high opinion of their personal importance to the proceedings nonetheless.

academic validation

Share definition Flag
feeling achieved or appreciated when receiving praise in school. while it can be a good motivator, constantly seeking academic validation can become a problem mentally. this can lead to purposefully overworking yourself to feel that adrenaline rush that comes with good marks.
Mom: Why are your grades so bad?
Me: Because I seek academic validation to the point where if I can't do it perfectly the first time then there's no use in trying at all.

Academic Circle Jerk

When a group’s discussion of concepts and ideas start to overwhelm the thought process that you ultimately end up just standing around stroking the other people's egos and accomplishing nothing.
We discussed rubrics, a list of criteria for grading student’s work, until we discussed ourselves into an academic circle jerk.

Young Academics On Ice

Share definition Flag
This is what "yaoi" stands for, parents! When your son/daughter mentions the word yaoi, this is what they mean.

YAOI is a nonprofit organization where underprivileged children with a high IQ learn to ice skate. A very beautiful organization, but mainly directed at teens and children.

If your son/daughter mentions YAOI and then begins to laugh, chances are they remembered a specific episode of YAOI which portrayed humor.

(For all non-parents here, you know what yaoi is. This is the definition you'll want to tell your parents - because it's right...)
Father: What are you reading?
Daughter: Uh, just some YAOI...
Father: What?
Daughter: Young Academics on Ice! It's, eh, a really funny screenplay!

academic welfare

Share definition Flag
The dumbing-down of standards at branch/regional campuses so that their lower-class students can pass and ultimately graduate.
Man, this test was hard! Where's my "academic welfare"?

The "academic welfare" situation at Miami Hamilton is necessary for their mouth-breathers.

Without that "academic welfare" at MUH, his lazy butt would have failed out long ago!

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.

- Barack Obama
- Harold Koh
